Cambridge’s MXW70 is a $599 Class D power amplifier

  • Cambridge Audio has announced the MXW70 power amplifier. This new half-width (215mm) box is designed to be paired with the similarly half-width MXN10 network streamer (reviewed here) or DACMagic 200 (reviewed here).

From the press release: “Premium, all-metal casework creates a minimalist, timeless design that’s flawlessly finished in Cambridge’s trademark Lunar Grey to match MXN10 music streamer and DacMagic 200M DAC.”

OK. But what’s inside the MXW70?

The power amplifier circuit is Class D, built around a Cambridge Audio-tuned Hypex nCore module to deliver 70wpc into 8 Ohms. Run two as monoblocks to unlock a whopping 250wpc into 8 Ohms. No 4 Ohm rating is supplied.

On the back panel, we see single-ended RCA inputs for the MXN10 and its app-based volume attenuation and balanced XLR inputs for the DACMagic and its front-panel volume wheel. A standard trigger cable is supplied for third-party pre-amplifiers to bring the MXW70 out of standby, as well as a USB adapter that allows the MXN10 to do the same.

Best of all, the MXW70 sells for only £499, €599 or US$599 to remind us that audiophiles working to a tighter budget have never had it so good.

The last word goes to the press release that says, “Since the introduction of the groundbreaking P40 amplifier in 1968, Cambridge Audio has crafted iconic sound in the UK – and MXW70 is no exception. Designed, engineered and built at our London HQ, it delivers emotive sound, with exceptional clarity, resolution and musicality.”

    Musicality” 🤔.
