“Have hi-fi system, will travel” with Pro-Ject’s Travel Set

  • We first saw Pro-Ject’s Travel Set at Munich High-End 2025. Now we have more details: it’s a go-anywhere hi-fi system where a pair of small two-way bookshelf speakers, a suitably tiny Bluetooth-equipped integrated amplifier, remote control, speaker cables and power brick (for the amplifier) sit inside a padded travel case ready for carry-on stowage.

    Let’s dig into the details…

The Stereo Box S3 BT amplifier weighs half a kilo and features two line-level inputs plus an aptX Bluetooth streaming input. Curiously, Pro-Ject’s press release tells us only the amplifier’s output into 4 Ohms (40wpc) and not the industry standard 8 Ohms. I checked to see if the Austrian company’s website had this information — but no. We’re also told nothing about the loudspeakers’ nominal input impedance and sensitivity. The latter would give us some clue as to how loud the Travel Set might play.

The press release and website also say nothing about the Speaker Box 3 E Carbon’s driver size, only that it’s made from a “fibre glass carbon composite”. I’m assuming the mid-bass driver is a 3-incher. That hunch is based on the supplied photos and the model name. Bass response is assisted by a rear-firing port and is rated by the manufacturer down to only 83Hz. This is a hi-fi system for someone happy not to hear all that much from the bottom two octaves.

Pro-Ject points out that the aluminium-wrapped amplifier has a “variable output for subwoofer or second zone amplifier” but if you already have a second zone amplifier, why bring this one from elsewhere? Moreover, subwoofers are anything but transportable. It’s advisable to view this system as is: one that will best a single Bluetooth speaker or soundbar on soundstage w i d t h.

Another wrinkle: unlike what we saw on the floor of the M.O.C., the travel case comes with no retractable handle or wheels. My press contact at Pro-Ject says that “was only a sample”.

The Travel Set also includes a set of six DampIt damping feet and a 3m pair of Connect it LS E Flex speaker cables.

Pricing? Get the loudspeakers in white or black for €699 or the loudspeakers in walnut for €750.
