Klipsch announces Klipschorn AK7 and La Scala AL6

  • Klipsch has announced new versions of its popular high-efficiency Klipschorn and La Scala loudspeaker models.

From the press release: “The new Klipschorn AK7 and La Scala AL6 models feature new modified Tractrix midrange horns, updated compression drivers, stunning new finish, and for the first time, allow users to add an optional external Heritage Active Crossover”.

    Let’s break it down…

Each model is a three-way design where the tweeter, midrange and woofer each enjoy their own “precisely engineered horn-loaded enclosure.”

A K-771 compression driver handles the uppermost frequencies, and it is now paired with a “patented, wide-dispersion extended phase plug”.

The midrange output comes from an in-house designed/made 3″ KT-1133-HP compression driver mounted to the back of a K-406M modified Trackrix horn. The horn’s throat is reportedly 2″ shorter than previous models. Why? According to Klipsch, to ensure its exit point sits closer to the other drivers’ exit points for better time alignment.

The bass driver is both folded-horn loaded and (for the first time) vented. The new bass reflex system helps the K-281 12″ woofer mine down to 40Hz (-4dB) in the La Scala AL6 and 34Hz (-4dB) in the Klipschorn AK7.

An active crossover is also available for each new model, about which the press release quotes Klipsch’s Roy Delgado:

“While we are thrilled with the performance of the passive crossover, the Heritage Active Crossover unlocks performance enhancements that are simply unattainable with a passive design. While the crossover frequencies remain fixed, users can adjust the gain of the LF and HF sections of the DSP active unit in order to compensate input sensitivities of different types of amplifiers.”

Pricing and available finishes are as follows:
