Pro-Ject’s Amp Box RS2 is a solid-state power amplifier…with tubes

  • Here comes a new compact power amplifier that isn’t made in China: Pro-Ject Audio Systems’ Amp Box RS2 is made in Europe; it connects a tube-buffered input stage to an all-discrete Class A/B output stage inside a half-width chassis for 80wpc into 8 Ohms or 130wpc into 4 Ohms.

From the press release: “The amplifier features a hybrid configuration, utilizing a differential stage with a double triode 6922 (6DJ8) at the input. This is followed by an oscillation stage employing 2SA1552T and 2SC4027T transistors. For the output stage, a pair of STD03N and STD03P transistors operate in class AB. The output‘s zero DC voltage is maintained via a DC servo mechanism.”

Inputs include single-ended RCA and balanced XLR sockets with the option to bridge two units into mono for 350wpc into 8 Ohms.

    Now comes the twist.

The optional – and confusingly-named – Power Box RS2 Amp is an external power supply that extracts 25% more output power from the Amp Box RS2.

Back to the press release: “A linear power supply consists of a big toroidal transformer with shielding between primary and secondary winding which acts as an isolation transformer and avoids penetration of interferences from mains into amplifier. This transformer has a big power reserve, compared to a standard power adaptor.”

Pricing says hello at €1799 for the amplifier and €999 for the power supply. Your choice of black or silver.
