Rega soups up Planar 3 turntable with RS Edition

  • UK manufacturer Rega wants to pull on our coat about a special edition of its Planar 3 turntable.

The Planar 3 RS Edition uses a CNC-machined custom pulley and Rega Reference EBLT drive belt to drive the 12mm glass platter — just like the standard Planar 3. And we still don’t need to remove that platter to change the speed from 33rpm to 45rpm and back again. This turntable is powered by a 24V low-noise motor housed inside an external Neo PSU MK2 box that offers an anti-vibration circuit and speed control.

    So, what’s new?

One of Rega’s neodymium cartridges—the elliptical nude Nd5—is factory-fitted to the Planar 3 RS’s RB330 tonearm and the (double-braced) plinth is made from a high-pressure laminate.

From the press release: “For the first time, the Planar 3 has been manufactured using a special High Pressure Laminate (HPL) which is usually reserved for Planar 6, Planar 8 and Planar 10 models to improve rigidity over the standard model.”

This new plinth is finished in ‘real’ brushed aluminium satin, edged with high-gloss black and topped with a ‘smoked’ plastic dust cover.

    RS? ‘Rega Special’.

Rega’s Planar 3 RS will sell for £999 or €1340
