Beyerdynamic readies DT 1770 PRO MKII, DT 1990 PRO MKII

  • Beyerdynamic marks its 100th anniversary with a pair of second-generation headphone models: the closed-back DT 1770 PRO MKII and the open-back DT 1990 PRO MKII. Both models feature a newly developed TESLA.45 driver, designed and made at the company’s headquarters in Heilbronn. According to Beyerdynamic, the new driver lowers distortion for a cleaner, sharper response, lending both new headphones a 30-Ohm impedance.

From the press release: “The membrane is made of high-performance PEEK polymer that delivers deep, precise bass, while a lighter voice coil made of aluminium-coated copper wire refines the treble. Each driver is thoroughly tested multiple times during production to ensure consistent, high-quality sound.”

It also seems that the German company has been listening to user feedback. The upper-most treble on the DT 1990 PRO MKII has been dialled back – as has the 8kHz region – but the details that live at 10kHz have been maintained. The DT 1770 PRO MKII has also been reworked with a smoother frequency response in the upper mids and a ‘more balanced’ delivery of the highest frequencies.

Back to the press release: “Both the DT 1770 PRO MKII and DT 1990 PRO MKII were designed for optimal comfort during long nights in the studio or editing tracks at home. The flexible spring steel headband, made from a combination of memory foam and durable leatherette, features a fontanelle recess to prevent pressure and discomfort from forming at the top of the head.”

However, both second-generation headphones come with detachable headbands and earcups. The DT 1770 PRO MKII ships with leatherette and velour earpads and the DT 1990 PRO MKII with two different sets of velour. The first is a “Producing Velour” that “delivers a fuller, more exciting sound thanks to a slight bass boost”. The second is a “Mixing & Mastering Velour,” which offers “a more analytical sound for making final mix decisions”.

Also inside the box: a hard carry case, a 3m straight cable and a 5m spiral cable.

Both new Beyers will sell for US$599. Shipping begins today.
