The MOON 891 is a streaming DAC, pre-amplifier & phono stage

  • Production samples have been floating around the globe for a while already but it now looks like Moon (by Simaudio) has finally started shipping its flagship ‘North Collection’ 891 network player and pre-amplifier. The 891 isn’t just a high-end streaming DAC but an analogue pre-amplifier and phono stage.

As part of its feature set, the MOON 891 features the Canadian company’s Moon Damping Base (MDB) system that reportedly reduces the impact of microphonics – where vibrational energy transforms into unwanted electrical noise – and M-RAY2 resistor ladder volume control.

Streaming functionality here is handled by MOON’s own MiND2 platform where iOS and Android app control is augmented by Apple AirPlay, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect and Roon Ready. Decoding comes by way of two “top-of-the-line 32-bit converters” (make and model not specified) laid out in a dual-mono configuration and assisted by Femto-second master (re)clocking. Hard-wired digital inputs number six with HDMI ARC fully present.

On the front panel, a 5″ colour screen shows us the volume level and active input – plus metadata and cover art when streaming – and allows for configuration of the MM and MC phono stage via the setup menu.

Icing the 891’s cake is the presence of the MOON BRM-1 remote control that puts touch controls, an aluminium volume knob and an OLED screen in our hands.

Pricing is not for the faint of wallet: £25,000 / €28,500.
