Podcast #52 – %THD: why is it MISLEADING?

  • In this episode of the Darko.Audio podcast, Srajan Ebaen shares his thoughts on Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and why THD figures can be misleading. According to Ebaen, it’s not the total amount of THD that matters most but how that total breaks down to even and odd-order components. Tiny amounts of high odd-order harmonic distortion are more audibly objectionable than larger doses of lower even-order harmonic distortion. Whodathunkit? This could explain why there still exists a healthy market for tube amplifiers and why the low-THD-driven enthusiasm for many super-affordable Chi-Fi DACs and amplifiers often gives way to descriptors such as ‘thin’, ‘edgy’ and ‘metal-tinged’ when those same DACs and amplifiers are heard in the real world.
