Sennheiser’s Momentum True Wireless 4 land with aptX Lossless

  • A new aptX Lossless-capable true wireless IEM enters the fray next month in the form of Sennheiser’s Momentum True Wireless 4 (MTW4) — but apart from an improved nozzle shape and tweaked ear tips that Sennheiser claims improve wear comfort and earwax resistance, little else had changed from an aesthetic point of view.

All the new stuff is on the inside.

That ‘new stuff’ centres on the inclusion of Qualcomm’s S5 Gen 2 sound platform that enables aptX Lossless for, in theory, lossless transmission of CD-quality audio. However, there’s a catch. To make use of the Sennheiser MTW4’s aptX Lossless capabilities, we also need a smartphone with a Snapdragon Sound chipset that supports aptX Lossless. Say hello to models from the likes of Vivo, Asus and Sony but at the time of writing, there’s no Apple and no Samsung.

With Bluetooth 5.4 on board, the MTW4 also support Bluetooth LE and Auracast, which allows users to broadcast audio to others.

Also improved on the MTW4 are battery life (up 30 mins per charge on the MTW3), earpiece reception (using Qualcomm’s RF Front End technology and better antennae) and phone call quality (with a new six-mic array and AI voice-processing algorithm).

The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 go on sale on 15th February for US$299. That’s a $50 price hike on the MTW3, which remains a favourite around here. The new model will ship in graphite, white/silver-capped and a new black/copper-capped edition.
