Amplifiers and speakers are the bread and butter of hi-fi reviewing but bread and butter can get stodgy very quickly. This year I mixed things up more than ever before – and it wasn’t always out of choice. An urgent eye operation in January forced me to publish a few videos about electronic music that were previously Patreon-only.
The downside of doing that was that more people than ever took to the comments section to complain about how I only listened to electronic music. Anyone paying proper attention knows this isn’t true. Learning that videos must be larger than life for some audience members, I spent the rest of the year making sure each video featured a couple of boomer-friendy music cuts to drive home the message that I listen to music beyond the electronic genre.
Don’t believe the people who tell you that hi-fi is “all about the music”. Because It isn’t. It’s about the gear as well. Otherwise, we’d all be happy listening on Bluetooth speakers and $20 earbuds. But equally, it’s not all about the hardware…
