Podcast #50: Rotel, Yamaha, Clayton Shaw & Scansonic HD

This year’s introduction of news summary podcasts with 6moons’ Srajan Ebaen isn’t just about showcasing what’s new in hi-fi. There’s often a subtext to each selection. For example, Rotel’s RAS-5000 streaming amplifier gives me a chance to talk about the futility of pre-judging a DAC circuit’s sound quality by its chip; and what might constitute a full streaming house come the end of 2024. Similarly, Srajan brings up Clayton Shaw’s latest creation – the Caladan – not just to clear up any confusion about how this new model squares itself with Shaw’s previous company Spatial Audio, but as a way to outline the advantages of open baffle loudspeakers. I then bring up the super-affordable Yamaha HS-3 and HS-4 loudspeakers to clarify the differences between powered and active loudspeakers.
