Tannoy announces three new Super Gold Monitors

  • SGM. That’s Tannoy shorthand for ‘Super Gold Monitor’; the Scottish company has announced three new models this week. Say hello to the SGM 10, the SGM 12 and the SGM 15 where the numbers speak to the size of the mid-bass driver surrounding the tweeter.

Tannoy first introduced the world to its ‘Dual Concentric’ drivers in 1947 as a way to tackle the comb-filtering effects and phase shift of frequencies, often around the cross-over region, when the tweeter is placed above (or below) the mid-bass driver. Sometimes this ‘Dual Concentric’ approach is called ‘point source’ because both drivers work from a common acoustic centre.

From Tannoy’s website: “With our Dual Concentric design, the woofer and tweeter are literally merged together, which positions them on the exact same axis, giving you best-in-class phase coherence. Since the sound is coming from the same point, it is a true point-source imaging scenario, and adding to that a spherical wave front that ensures an extremely even dispersion both vertically and horizontally, the SUPER GOLD’s off-axis performance is breathtaking.”

Assisting with room placement, all three SGM models feature front-firing ports and an “energy control system” for tweaking the sound according to the room’s acoustic make-up and/or personal taste. On the SGM 10 and 12, that control system is a 2-way. On the SGM 15, it’s a 3-way.

But perhaps the most obvious feature of Tannoy’s latest passive speaker series is the “dense and rigid” cabinets’ mid-century modern styling that nods heavily toward Tannoy’s past. Also worth noting is that the SGM series is designed and made in the UK.

The SGM 10 are on sale now for £5995, the SGM 12 for £6995 and the SGM 15 for £8495.
