Streaming music’s biggest problem is its invisibility. Shelves full of physical media suggest to our eyes what to play next. A hard drive full of songs cannot, by definition, do this. It’s why Spotify et al put so much stock in playlists, either generated by third parties or tailored to our individual listening habits. Roon and Plex’s home screens offer similar playlist suggestibility using their own streaming service integrations. Roon adds Qobuz and Tidal whilst Plex’s dedicated music streaming app – Plexamp – adds only Tidal.
This past month has seen Plexamp announce ChatGPT integration via its Sonic Sage service (for which an Open AI API key is required) and the German developer of rooExtend has just launched a new Roon extension called rooAIDJ, which connects ChatGPT interface queries to a Roon Core. This video takes a look at both, with a heavier lean toward Roon given its stronger audiophile world penetration.
Kindly note: this is not a beginner’s guide to either software platform. I made this video for viewers already familiar with the basics of Roon and/or Plex/amp.
