Ahead of my investigation into the possible advantages of using two GoldenEar Forcefield 30 subwoofers (instead of just one), I was curious as to how many subwoofers were being used by members of the Darko.Audience. And that curiosity led to a poll.
First up, the Darko.Audio YouTube community page where a whopping 13,000 people responded. (That’s over half the number of people attending Munich High-End each year). I made sure to ask about the household’s primary audio system – lest anyone had more than one – and home theatre people were also given an explicit nod.
The results were surprising.
Almost half of all respondents are going without a sub. This either means they are living the good life with a pair full-range floorstanders or that their living situation won’t permit the addition of a subwoofer e.g. apartment dwellers not wishing to upset their neighbours.
Then again, almost as many respondents are using one subwoofer as those who have none. And 14% are rocking two or more subwoofers with a high concentration on keeping it to a pair.
And it’s almost an identical story over on Patreon where 361 people cast their votes in a similar poll:
I expected a heavier lean towards more than subwoofer from the Patreon faithful, who usually show greater commitment to more hardware than their YouTube-based brethren. But no. Once again, almost half are going without a subwoofer, their numbers almost matched by those rocking one subwoofer with the rest using two or more subs with most of those using just two.
