As We See It – Letter From Japan (Stereophile)

  • Two trips to Tokyo, one in October and one in December, have given rise to all manner of Japanese audio-related coverage on DAR throughout the past five months. I’ve written about Audio Union, the Disk Union network, the e-earphone stores, the Fujiya Avic store, Yodobashi Camera’s over-abundant hifi supplyaccompanying AudioQuest representatives as they introduce products to the Japanese audiophile press and of course e-earphone’s Portable Audio Festival and Fujiya Avic’s headphone Festival.

In a very short space of time I’ve been exposed to a good deal of what Japan has to offer on the audio front. How it differs from the USA therefore became the pointy end of my first column for Stereophile magazine. Right in your face after turning the front cover of the February 2016 issue (out now) is this fella’s first As We See It editorial entitled “Letter from Japan”. It’s an honour to make the roll call of Stereophile contributors. Even more so that John Atkinson has invited me to write  a second AWSI editorial for publication in the very near future.

    1. Do you get a commission from people that click-thru and subscribe? I was just stopping by to see if the Schiit Multi-Bit review had been posted.

      • Commission on click-throughs? Nope – and little cynical of you to suggest as much. Stereophile pay a flat fee for each piece and that is that. Schiit Multibit piece coming very soon.

      • Yeah, I landed back in Sydney to the news and don’t mind admitting that I shed a tear or five right there at the airport.

    2. Greatly enjoyed the Stereophile As We See It piece. Evocative of the place and I experienced a pleasureable nostalgia hit for the wonderful assortment of electronics shops in Akihabara. Your “around the town” videos are always welcome as well.

    3. Hi John,

Congratulations on your Stereophile gig. I loved all of your articles on Japan. I am currently in Tokyo for business this week. I also visited Tower Records in Shibuya. It was awesome browsing through the CD aisles looking at their vast selection. I miss the CD stores very much. In the past I visited Virgin Megastores in Paris, NYC and Disney World.
I will enjoy reading your Stereophile article when I return to USA tomorrow.
