#nowplaying Banco De Gaia – Maya (20th Anniversary Edition)

  • Banco De Gaia (aka Toby Marks) this week releases a 20th anniversary edition of his debut album (proper) – Maya. The man behind the Maya mask refers to this album as ‘global electronica’. Personally, I’d peg it as ambient dub tinged with world music influences. No matter the pigeonholing, there’s considerable audiophile appeal here: deep bass and spacious atmospherics.

This expanded edition features (among many others) the full 22 minute version of “Shanti” and an early live version of “Data Inadequate” which would later make an appearance as the standout track on Banco De Gaia’s Live At Glastonbury album. Most startling of all, the original 9 track release has been blown out to an epic 26 cuts. TWENTY SIX! That’s 1.5Gb in FLAC money.

“I have put together a triple CD set that features the original album plus two extra discs: one features alternative unreleased mixes of almost every track of the album…while the other contains a bevy of remixes, including a brand new version of Mafichi Arabi by Temple Hedz.”, says Marks via the official Banco De Gaia website.

bancoHowever, there’s a wrinkle: you can’t just hop on over to Banco De Gaia’s bandcamp page to buy this album as a digital download. Nope. Toby Marks wants to keep this release “special“, confirming last week via the Banco De Gaia Facebook page that the 20th anniversary edition of Maya will NOT be made available as a separate digital download or on Spotify and the like.

The ONLY way to get your paws on this as a digital release is to purchase the deluxe 3CD set via Banco De Gaia’s bandcamp page. After stumping up your 15 quid for the physical media, a download of the entire set is all yours in any format of your choosing: ALAC, FLAC,OGG or MP3, as seems to be standard with most of bandcamp’s digital releases. But hurry: this 3CD package is limited to 1500 copies.

Interestingly, it’s also available from Amazon for just over 13 quid but you won’t get a lossless download with that. Moreover, Marks will see more of your money if you buy at bandcamp. My advice: stick to bandcamp.
