It’s my final post for 2012 so it’s appropriate that I hit you with my favourite chunks of electronic music of this year, both of which are available for FREE download.
Regular readers will know of my penchant for great sounding electronica. Keeping up with new cuts is a full-time job – especially with so much great rock music also on the exponential up – I keep abreast of things by regularly feasting on Resident Advisor and Boiler Room podcasts. From which, I have two picks for the best electronic mixes of 2012.
October’s ambient-to-ambulance RA podcast from A Sagittariun was a slow bullet from nowhere. Not much is known about this Bristol-based producer but the track list speaks volumes: newer stuff (Monolake, Robert Hood) next to older stuff (Biosphere, Eno, Can), all stitched together with snippets of dialogue from old radio and TV broadcasts. If you’re a newcomer to electronica music, this is as good a place as any to begin your journey. Make no mistake, this mix is incredible.

I only stumbled upon Perc’s podcast/mix for Dystopia a few weeks ago (if that). This one hits hard and right between the eyes. Relentless, metallic slabs of techno drive this mix forward and there’s a killer acid-infused middle section. This has little to associate it with [what the Americans like to call] EDM or the favourite city of lazy revisionists: Detroit. If anything, it’s very London. At other times, teutonic. The second half recalls Richie Hawtin’s legendary Decks, FX and 909 release. One for an intense New Years Eve.
