Who better to visit over the Christmas break than the Australian Santa Claus of tube amplifiers, Earle Weston? Weston lives on the edge of the world, on the very lip of the Mornington Peninsula, where he hand-builds a range of tube-infused boxes. You could not meet a nicer, more humble fellow (which makes a refreshing change from the numerous overactive egos milling about the hi-fi scene).
Weston is an amplifier engineer who doesn’t talk like an engineer. He doesn’t try to blind you with science or impress you with his extensive knowledge. Nope, he brings everything down to layman’s terms when explaining the differences in capacitors used in his Topaz and Troubadour amplifiers. He’s also a Microsoft Zune fanatic (but we won’t hold that against him!).
