Twin Peaks was the pinnacle of TV-as-art/entertainment. It was a show that transcended the medium. It was dark, funny and – at times – downright silly.
(Cough) Instrumental to its success was Angelo Badalamenti’s score which director David Lynch has begun to slowly (re-)release under the project banner “The Twin Peaks Archive”.
To be made available in a piecemeal manner (bundle by bundle) the archive is an ‘open album’ of soundtrack pieces (and many outtakes) from the Twin Peaks TV series and movie. This is audiophile-grade material that will regularly swing/sling the listener from comfort to eery disquiet – and back again. 96 songs have been released so far; they are available for download as Apple Lossless and MP3.
These are the sounds of the woods at night, an angel of a girl floating across the floor, something sinister on the wind, the echoes of an America that never existed. The owls are not what they seem.
